Experience Charleston like a local at the 45-room Fulton Lane Inn which is nestled along a quaint alleyway that juts directly off King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston’s bustling shopping district. Part of the Charming Inns collection of properties, the Fulton Lane Inn is quietly unassuming and seemingly familiar despite its location just steps away from the excitement and liveliness of the one of the world’s most beloved cities.

Originally built in 1912 for a Civil War blockade runner turned tailor, the three-story building of pressed brick and granite trim with a yellow brick facade has been updated with modern conveniences but still maintains its original historical features. Each room is uniquely appointed with tropically-inspired retreat-style furnishings; and even at the standard level, our cozy accommodations included a soft spring-like color palette, decorative artwork depicting the iconography of Charleston, a shuttered armoire with drawers for storage, and a luxurious cotton matelasse bed spread which combined lightweight comfort with superior warmth to provide a surprisingly sound night’s sleep.

The vintage-styled water faucets and eyelet-patterned shower curtain in the bathroom gave the space a particularly ‘homey’ feeling; and the full-length mirror and two luggage racks were especially appreciated. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator, iron, ironing board, and hairdryer for traveler convenience; and all areas are designated as non-smoking (although smoking is allowed in the courtyard of the nearby Kings Courtyard Inn). Lodging types include standard rooms, deluxe kings, petite suites, and two-room suites, along with cathedral suites which feature vaulted ceilings, large windows overlooking King Street, a two-person whirlpool tub, and more.

Additional facility amenities at Fulton Lane Inn include complimentary wireless Internet service, access to a nearby fitness club, 24-hour concierge service, off-street parking in the adjacent lot, daily coffee service, a relaxing happy hour wine and cheese reception, and evening sherry served in the lobby as a nod to an established Charleston tradition. A complimentary breakfast consisting of pastries, cereals, and fruits can be served in-room or may be enjoyed next door in the sun-filled courtyard of the adjoining Kings Courtyard Inn.

For casual restaurant seating with cooked items available for purchase, diners may choose to visit Kitchen 208 for made-to-order fare such as the popular Cobblestone Sandwich consisting of an egg, candied bacon, tomato, arugula, gruyere cheese, and lemon mayo on a benne seed bun. Upscale dinner options are also available at one of Charleston’s best fine dining establishments, the four-star Circa 1886. This award-winning restaurant is located in the original carriage house of the historic Wentworth Mansion and is ranked the #12 Top Restaurant in the U.S. by TripAdvisor’s 2014 Travelers’ Choice Awards.
